Temporary dentures
are placed in the mouth immediately after the teeth are removed.
This prevents the patient from being toothless after a full mouth
extraction. They also act as bandages by reducing post surgical
bleeding and aid in healing after the surgery.
It is very important
that the dentures are worn full time for a few days or the post
surgical swelling will prevent wearing them until the swelling goes
down.
In
three to six months the tooth sockets heal and the gums shrink. The
temporary dentures will become loose and denture adhesive will be
needed to keep them in. After healing the dentures can be relined to
help them fit better.
Note:
Did you know that
dentures date back as far as 700 BC. The Etruscans designed false
teeth out of ivory and bone that were secured into the mouth by gold
bridgework.
